Previous patches have made the game vastly buggy in all sorts of ways but I think this kind of damage to your OS is a new one.

You do realize that many companies release software that are free of critical bugs, correct?
Imagine what console software companies would still be in business if they released finalized software on hardcopy that crashed systems. The convenience of updating has made companies like CCP lazy. This is not the first time CCP has released an update that ruined an OS.
That people have to learn to expect CCP not to do a proper job tells me enough.
Console games still ship with many bugs. They tend to be rarer than in PC software as people are less tolerant, and systems are standardised. Many console games are still patched via e.g. X-Box Live.
The problem is really the complexity and open-endedness of PCs, which is also the reason they are so popular. This problemn in particular is a pretty major error on CCP's part too, though.
